The College and Community Fellowship (CCF) is pleased to announce its Theater for Social Change (TSC) ensemble’s participation in the Wellesley Centers for Women lecture series “Moving Beyond the Carceral State: Identifying Alternative Pathways for Women and Girls” on Wednesday, April 15th.

The event, which begins at 9am at Wellesley College’s LuLu Chow Wang Campus Center, seeks to heighten awareness, increase knowledge, and initiate action-oriented responses to address intersecting inequalities that confront justice-involved women and girls in the United States.

The Theater for Social Change ensemble uses theater to raise awareness about the importance of increased access to education and the broader issue of reentry and criminal justice reform. Each performance is original, written by its members, who themselves have not only experienced the criminal justice system first hand, but have successfully reentered society and attained a higher education.

“We are thrilled to have our TSC ensemble work with the Massachusetts Women’s Justice Network and the Wellesley Centers for Women,” said College and Community Fellowship Executive Director Vivian Nixon. “From Riker’s Island, the CUNY Graduate Center to churches and colleges throughout the state, TSC continues to not only serve as an artistic outlet for our CCF scholars, but aims to challenge stereotypes and preconceived notions of who formerly incarcerated women in America are, and more importantly what they can achieve.”

The performance by TSC during the “Moving Beyond the Carceral State” series seeks to act as a shining example of success in what formerly justice-involved women can achieve, not only through their performance, but by leading an example of what successful re-entry looks like.

After the 12:15pm performance, TSC will engage in a question and answer session with the audience. TSC will also be leading an improv workshop between 3pm-4pm.

The event is open to the public, but space is limited. To RSVP, email: slange2@wellesley.edu.
